18. Thin Ice

From the mists of time, carried as folk law and until now only passed by word of mouth, in dim pubs, over strong brews, comes this tale from Manchester.

A site had been chosen part way down the edge of a quarry, access was from the top edge, by hanging from tree roots. The event was at night, so the crew did not actually see the rest of the quarry, or its contents. As it happens the quarry bottom was accessible from the far side and was apparently quite flat. One (or more teams according to who tells the story) approached from the quarry opposite the hidden site, the competitors ran only what seemed quite a flat surface in approaching the hide. Yes the surface was flat, but then Ice usually is. Skating on thin ice was the term used, and it didn’t hold for long, the competitors feet penetrated the crust, fortunately not far, only up to their knees, as the quarry bottom was not filled with nice clean water. The local farmer was using it to store the run-off from him pig sties......

When they got out of the mire, the cliff awaited, and the TX crew could smell them coming. Also when they got back to their cars, all the windows were opened to let the smell out, but it was cold outside so they put the heaters to full blast... wrong move.....
